Abstract

The paper presents some results of an investigation using dictionaries, parliamentary annals, contextual articles, and other references in Brazilian politics between the years 1860 and 1870, looking how the term "civilization" is expressed. Through it the intention was to evaluate how liberal conservatives, liberal radicals and ultramontanos (ultramontane) made political statements around the Religious Issues (1872-1875), with different horizons and particular proposals for the meanings of that term. It is noteworthy that even in the traditionalist version it is possible to envisage the use of the term "civilization" bond with the idea of Christendom.
