Abstract

The article inquires into the relationship between religión and politics in Chile as well as into the problems generated by the establishment of a republic with its new ways of legitimization. It analyzes the polemics over religious tolerance between the Chilean jurist, Juan Egaña and the former Spanish priest, theologian and journalist, José María Blanco White. The debate originated in Egaña's text Examen instructivo sobre la Constitución política de Chile. The terms of the discussion show that Egaña's defense of religious exclusivism is essentially political, supporting social and political order, and sustained in his lack of confidence on human nature and reason.
