Abstract

After a period of oblivion, which covered most of the Early Modern Era, the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal, would raise interest amongst the Portuguese Crown, in the 1760’s and 1770’s. That would trigger the conception of an enlightened project known as “The Restoration of the Kingdom of Algarve”, aimed at the economic recovery of the region, but also at reinstating the sovereignty of the Crown in the algarvian territory. This display of power, framed within the scope of Absolutism and trying to strengthen and centralize power, would be achieved mostly through an administrative reorganization of the region.
