Abstract

José de Orueta Pérez de Nenín (1866-1934) had a prominent involvement in the political, economic and cultural life of the Basque Country of his time. In this article, the historic context that surrounds Orueta´s character is initially studied, related to the debate around the “fueros” and the autonomy in the Basque Country throughout the 19th century and the first part of the 20th. Being that Orueta was a liberal defender of the “fueros” and the autonomy, special attention is paid to the role of liberalism in the debate around these topics, and to the concept of “fuerismo liberal” or “liberal-fuerismo”. Once the context in which Orueta must be located is established, the article delves into this author´s political thought, to discover a thinker who is original but also inherits a solid intelectual tradition.
