Abstract

The 27 countries of the European Union develop national power to prevent crime, although in different forms and levels of involvement. Identifying and analysing national crime prevention strategies will indicate lack of focus and disparity in implementation. Criminology is a transdisciplinary science that analyses crime and is argued to be essential to propose, execute and evaluate public prevention policies. New advances in evidence-based Criminology can facilitate the focus of crime prevention on efficiency throughout the European territory.

Crime observatories are dedicated to providing relevant and updated information on the phenomenon of crime and violence in order to contribute to public prevention policies and reduce crime. In the EU of 27, there are different observatories, centres, or councils of prevention, but there is no agency that concentrates this disparity in prevention treatment. European Crime Prevention Network (EUCPN) was created in 2001 and has had different periods of development. Currently, an evaluation of this Network has been carried out, published in June 2023, which analyses and facilitates the discussion of this article. In addition, improvements are proposed in the concentration of crime prevention in the Union that aim to support the objective of this article.
