Abstract
Throughout the central books of Metaphysics, Aristotle investigates the four senses of the term being:accidentally, in itself, as trueand false, as potencyand act. After arguing that the first sense of being is to be substance, Aristotle argues that the substance, in the strict sense, should be understood as a form, not as a matteror compound.
