Abstract

The purpose of this critical note is to present the existing studies on abduction and their applications in different fields such as artificial intelligence, logic programming, diagnosis, natural language studies and others. Despite the lack of formal and conceptual models generally accepted, the different applications and definitions show that the fundamental problem of the proposals is how can we explain the inference of a conclusion that is only tentative, defeasible. This is a problem related with the representation of knowledge, and the interpretation and control in the inference process.
