Abstract

The catholic religion has been a staple in the construction of basque nationalist identity. However, the ecclesiastical organization has not favored this process as there has not existed an ecclesial structure shared by Alava, Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa and Navarra. The restructuring of the basque dioceses was claimed by the first nationalism and then, more openly, by the priests who opposed to the Franco's regime since the early sixties of last century. After the end of the dictatorship, basque bishops asked for a common ecclesiastical province for their dioceses. However, this request also generated clerical and political resistance, especially in Navarra.
