Abstract

The closing of the Gibraltar frontier gate in 1969, as a consequence of a decision of the Franco's Government and his Foreign minister F.M. Castiella, deteriorated the relationship between the British colony and the Campo area. The gibraltarian newspapers criticized the measure of the Spanish government and spread out a very negative image of Spain and of the Spanish people. This article analyzes the reject of the isolation from the gibraltarian public opinion and its consequences. The attitude of many gibraltarians, mainly of the younger people, as a result of this political decision was going to make difficult an hypothetical agreement with Spain over the question of sovereignty in the future.
