Abstract

Our study aims to analyze the Misericórdias in Early Portuguese Modern as institutions that working with families. First, because they acted as large family units, where its members were united in spirit, and because a significant portion of them were united by blood. The other line of analysis focuses on the relationships that were established with the family groups that attended and families receiving charity. Institutions with a view mainly abroad, the Santas Casas chose the poor as a priority for his help, for lack of family or family groups be in need of assistance, taking into account not only economic cycles but also biological cycles of family members.
