Abstract
In the Peronist discourse, to distinguish children as «privileged» and to construct a promissory future for them refers to two key subjects. Firstly, it alludes to the definition of the means to guarantee a childhood without shortages. Secondly, it includes one political assessment of infancy detailing the contrasts between the «New Argentina» ruled by Juan Perón and its oligarchic past. This historical study evaluates these definitions of childhood and the socio-political meaning of work and education in the popular and nationalist Perón's government. The objective of this paper is to analyze the meaning of a phrase widespread in peronist Argentina, which stated emphatically that «Children were the only privileged». What did this slogan mean? What were these «privileges»? What was the role of textbooks devoted to recreation and early childhood education, as those belonging to the Book Collection: «General Perón» published in 1948 that are analyzed here? How were socialization spaces, education and recreation for children thought and configured?
