Abstract

In the nineteenth Century, a special house for prostitute or marginal women was created in Bilbao that was known as "Nuestra Señora de la Caridad o del Refugio". This house fulfilled two conditions: to protect them and to enclose them. In this article I will explaiin the origin of this institution, its financing, its organisation and its good work until its disappearance. This work includes quantitative information as well, which will permit us to approach the social reality of the marginalized women in he city of Bilbao during the 1800.
