Abstract

Juana de Vega, Countess of Espoz y Mina, was one of the leading female of the Spanish progressive liberalism of the 19th century. This article looks at their contribution to the definition of progressive political culture with his writings and public performances. They emphasize their contributions in the realization of personal values and civic virtues that draw the prototype of virtuous citizen, his promotion of basic progressive identity concepts and institutions (constitutional monarchy, defense of freedoms against despotism, elitism integrator, liberal catholicism) and the example provided with their philanthropic and charitable activities. The Countess represented the model of progressive woman who is involved with his pen and his vital activism in the public sphere, a presence which materialized without breaking the barriers defined by the ideology of domesticity and complementarity.
