Abstract
El debate desatado en la opinión pública española a consecuencia
de la crisis de 1898 incidió en distintos planos de los acontecimientos
que pusieron fin al secular imperio español. Al menos en uno de los aspectos
de la crisis, en su versión internacional, había coincidencia en
las críticas internas e internacionales a la actuación del gobierno de España:
las alianzas no pueden ser improvisadas a última hora. A pesar de
que en los debates de Cortes, conservadores y liberales se cruzaran mutuas
acusaciones sobre la manera en la que unos y otros habían concebido
las relaciones internacionales de España. o que de forma tan reiterada
se hablase del «egoísmo» de las potencias europeas. causa de su
desatención hacia los problemas de España
