Bulls and Politics in the 20th Century: A Reciprocated Passion

Abstract
With the Spanish-American War in 1898, which opens the debate on the Problem of Spain, bulls and politics are revealed as two inseparable elements. Likewise, the rapid politicization of public life during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera coincides with the irruption of sport and mass culture, which, in Spain, increases interest in football and bulls. This is demonstrated by the rise of bullfights in the Second Republic and, above all, the Civil War, which politicizes these celebrations forever and activates many of the stereotypes that Spain had dragged on for centuries. In any case, at the end of the Franco regime and at the beginning of the transition to democracy, bulls are already universally accepted as a Spanish symbol, which explains the progressive rejection by Catalan
