Abstract

The city of Cádiz has a long tradition of wine business, which has been one of the main economic activities developed in the province, especially since the mid-19th century, a time of growth and prosperity. However, at the end of that century, a crisis in the Andalusian wine sector brought serious difficulties for the wine companies in the region, including Lacave & Company, the object of this study. By studying the company accounts, the notarial deeds, the registers and censuses of foreigners, and other publications of the time, it is intended to show how this company developed its winemaking activity at the end of the nineteenth century. The study is specifically focusing on analyzing what were the strategies developed by this mercantile society to face the difficulties of the sector in those years of crisis, as well as their effectiveness.
