Abstract

In this paper, we set out to examine the controversy held between Elio Vittorini, director of the Il Politecnico journal, and some prominent members of the cultural apparatus of the Italian Communist Party. We take such controversy as an occasion to reflect upon the terms in which the debate between politics and culture took place in postwar Italian Marxism, and the specific role of intellectuals in the strategy of political hegemony that the PCI intended to develop.
