Abstract
We had partially studied the performance of the Church behind the Republican lines during the Spanish Civil War in connection with other key features about the religious part of the conflict. The “tolerance” of religious activities after the initial prosecution and later tries of reinstallation of the public cult had been essential for the study. The 1938 visit to Rome of the General Vicar of Tarragona, Salvador Rial, has frequently been highlighted as the most important event of both his life and the fight to restore the religious life in the Republican Catalonia. The study of the Vatican sources had not been included before and it shows the attention the Holy See gave to the worshippers in the Republican area and Its role among the different forces involved in the war. This work fulfills that intent.
