Abstract

The article analyzes to what extent the legacy of the First Republic and some of its top leaders influenced the process of structuring Catalan nationalist republicanism. We also intend to study to what extent the republican nationalists repeated some of the contradictions that caused the collapse of that first republican experience in Spain.

The central axis of the investigation will be El Poble Català (1904-1919), the main press organ of Catalan republicanism. Through its pages we can reconstruct the complex process of appropriation that this new-style republicanism will try to carry out in relation to part of the legacy of the First Republic, of which they considered themselves legitimate heirs. The consultation of the memoirs and some personal documentary collections of republican nationalist leaders, of monographs and, occasionally, of other republican newspapers, will constitute the rest of the sources on which we will base our study.
