Abstract

This article focuses on the discourse, images, symbols and attitudes that contributed to forge a peculiar «war culture» among Basque nationalist combatants during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. Basque nationalist journals, autobiographies, journalistic accounts, personal sources such as war diaries and soldiers' letters are analysed, aiming at tracing the emergence and consolidation of the main thematic ingredients of that distinctive war culture, whose remembrance consolidated itself within the Basque nationalist community during the Franco years and contributed to generate both a peculiar memory and a palingenetic cult to the Basque nationalist soldiers by both the Basque Nationalist Party and the radical nationalist left.
