Abstract

The repression in the Basque Country and Navarre during the Spanish Civil War varied according to time and place. This article, adopting a chronological approach, examines the diverse forms of repression in both the Republican and Francoist zones between 1936 and 1939, discussing its main characteristics and impact within each chronological period. It argues that the creation of the Basque autonomous police force, the Ertzaña, and the efforts of the Basque Government to guarantee defendants a fair trial are the defining characteristics of the repression in the Republican zone. The article then examines the significant issue of the Francoist repression of the Basque clergy and the purge of Basque society undertaken by the regime.
