Abstract

This article offers a global vision of what was the first Basque exile during the Civil War: the exit towards other countries of scores of thousands of people between 1936 and 1939. Inside this chronological framework, I address the exodus undertaken from Guipúzcoa, the massive evacuations of the civilian population caused by the offensive against the north front between March and October of 1937, the action of the Basque Government in its organization and in the attention to the refugees, the solidarity and aid of diverse governments and social agencies, as well as the presence of the Basques in Catalonia. This study offers an overall vision of these facts that marked to Basque people in a critical moment of their history. In this analysis, I pay special attention to the exodus of the children, who represent some of the principle protagonists of this process.
