Abstract

Before 1808 the Spanish Church was plunged in a deep crisis that was facing reformists and reactionary. The lack of unity became evident after the French invasion, which divided to the clergy between supporters of the king José and loyalists Fernando VII, and inside these there existed a minority in favour of the liberalism and a majority that was longing for the old alliance between Throne and Altar. The liberal policy of the Spanish Parliament of Cadiz, in spite of his grants towards the Catholic Church, strengthened the interests of this reactionary group, which saw the liberal ones as enemies of the religion.
