Abstract

International concern over political changes in Spain at the end of Franco's Dictatorship was a long-lasting concern. In this paper we are going to review the different positions held in France and USA. The problem was that Prince Juan Carlos, once elected Franco's successor —his heir—, projected no image at all and nobody could believe he could bring about the liberalization of the Spanish political system. Building up the image of Prince Juan Carlos as the first transition leader was a complex and cautious process; what's more, it was essentially the result of international consensus.
