Abstract

My research is a contribution to the study of the working class, particularly the study of the making of the working class identity. The research is located in Biscay, in the aftermath of the XIXth and XXth centuries, and it analyzes the role of prostitution and the figure of the prostitute in the making of Basque working class identity. My analysis is focused on the ways the Basque working class dealt with its identification in relation to the figure of the prostitute, imposed by the middle classes. This assimilation was one of the most important discursive artefacts that hegemonic classes activated on the workers to impose a class definition characterized by traces of inmorality and a lack of dignity.
