Abstract

The literary works of Galdós and Valle Inclán on Isabel II, while adhering more or less to the historical facts, also contain a clear political purpose and historical vision. The authors exploit the figure of the Queen in order to identify the monarchy with the problems of Spain in the 19th century, while positing the republic as a superior form of government in both moral and political terms. The influence and the popularity of these two writers facilitated both the spread and the success of this discourse.
