Abstract

The presence of Spain at the Expositions Universelles, or World's Fairs, that took place between 1851 and the Second World War was really not outstanding. Nevertheless, it is certain that the Spanish administration carried out a notable effort to show in some of those fairs the so-called essence and the progresses of the nation. It was without doubt at the Paris exhibition of 1878 when the Spanish participation had more international repercussion, although the glory then reached was not agree with the socio-economic situation of the country, and it was based near exclusively in the success of the exoticist national pavilion. This paper studies the Spanish presence at the exposition of 1878, the structural difficulties of the participation and the limitations of the structure finally presented. We wish to emphasize the public success reached by the national pavilion and the intensity of the Spanish participation in two of the most outstanding special exhibitions that were organized during the fair: the exhibitions of archaeology and anthropology.
