Abstract

The object of this article is to analyse the evolution of street lighting of gas and electricity in Andalusia in the first third of the 20th Century. For that reason I emphasize the competition existing between the electricity sector and gas sector for the control of the street lighting. The main source used in that investigation is Estadística del Impuesto sobre el Consumo de luz de gas, electricidad y carburo de calcio, a publication not very consulted for the specialists. That study show some of the keys to the recession experimented by gas companies and the success of electricity companies during the period studied. In 1920 that fight was won by the electricity sector. This project also permit to know that the andalusian council make an important effort to incorporate the electricity lighting. Nevertheless, during the that period of time the andalusian electricity sector dedicated to the business of the light had a less positive evaluation than the State in general. And Also the average expense per habitant of the andalusian councils in the purchase of electricity light was lower than the Sapanish average at the beginnings of the 30s.
