Abstract

This work attempts to analyze the possible convergence of these communities through contributions on the contemporary economic history of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias, and also to explain the causes of the different levels of development achieved. The chronology of industrial expansion does not explain the delay of some provinces, but rather, the prolonged stay of non competitive, both private and public firms within a protectionist policy. The enterprising action of business leaders has had a decisive role in economic progress. During the past 150 years, industrialization and modernization the Cantabrian economy has completely changed, as well as in Asturias, but the differences in terms of wealth between the territories remains constant.
