Abstract

Among the paternalistic policies implemented in the mining industry in the French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais to attract, establish and adapt a suitable workforce, the vegetable gardens of the Société des Mines de Lens deserve to be treated separately. This company gave some plots to its miners and promoted its cultivation. In any case, there is a clear change in the reception of these initiatives by the company that matches with an institutional renovation at the end of XIXth century, but also with a substantive change in coal mining systems. This article attempts to highlight the relationship between the success of the horticultural leisure and a specific work culture, almost craft, that is slowly dissapearing from that time.
