Abstract

19th century liberalism had to conceive new concepts and revolutionary technologies in view of unpriming the explosive potentiality of the situation. Distinguishing civil society and the State —but only for recomposing them— was the way by which political scientists and political theorists point out the problem regarding a peculiar pathology of democracy. Free individuals who emancipated themselves from orders and corporate bodies and who had to sew up again a relation among them keeping the system of conditions which permitted their individuation and the chances of their social mobility. For reconstructing the parabola «from society to sociology» it is necessary not only to study the emer gence of the concept of «society» in the wider context of european liberalism, but also to focus on the cruciality of this transition.
