Abstract

This paper proposes a comparative study of the concept of people in the central years of the Sexenio democrático, when Spain receives the news of the Franco-Prusian war and of the Comune of Paris in March-May of 1871. In these specific circumstances, the concept of people is submitted to new and different valuations according to the echoes and interpretations that the French events arise in the Spanish press and in the immediate historiography. From the opposite re presentations of people seen as a chanelled or uncontrolled force to the politic instru mentalizations of the concept of people, it is shown that people, in spite of the crisis of this concept in these years, remains an indubitable symbolic referent.
