Abstract

This paper analyzes José Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850) thought, specially his idea of «particular sovereignty of peoples» starting from the concept of «peoples». On one hand, the concept is upheld by a republican language where law was fundamental in order to guarantee «virtuous citizens» freedom. On the other, it kept authority, that legalized «federal system» and at the same time conferred the highest authority to Artigas himself, who becomes the responsible of the system. The concept was of paramount importance in Río de la Plata, becoming one of the basis of the constitution of the new States, so as in future Argentina as in Uruguay.
