Abstract

In Spain, the Cortes of Cadiz (1810-1814) was the decisive period for the definition and dissemination of a new meaning of the term «citizen», as referring to the belonging to a political community and not to the condition of a native or resident of a city. But the initial success of the language of citizenship declined during the 19th century, as a result of the limitation of the political rights. In its place a language of social class becomes predominant, not only in the 19th cen tury but also in the first third of the 20th century, including the democratic period of the Second Republic (1931-1936).
