Abstract

The discourse on citizenship is crucial in the 19th Century Spanish History. All the political debates between the different tendencies couldn't but consider this question, since the definitions and interpretations of this concept implied the construction of a certain political and social order.

From 1808 to 1840, when the Liberal State was being constructed several political discourses were developed. This discourses contended in order to impose its different models of social integration, from the moderate liberalism that was clearly excluding, to the democratic and egalitarian republican one, passing through the hierarchical progresist one, which proposed the participation of all the social groups, although in different areas according to their abilities and their social roles. This text takes into account the different concepts of citizenship that were constructed during that convulse period.
