Abstract

This article explores the history of the liberal paradigm of public opinion. The concept itself denotes a double origin in Europe and America. After commenting on the political discursive contexts that surrounded the emergence of the concept in France, Britain and Spain, the author argues that public opinion is a concept, a metaphor and a social event that pervades Europe and America. However, this resemblance is counterbalanced by important semantic discontinuities across countries, historical moments, and political cultures.
