Abstract

We have studied in the present paper the roll of merchant bankers in the firsts phases of Basque industrialization. To be exact, we have chosen the case of Guipúzcoa, where the origins ofe the modern industry can be traced to the fourth decade of the XIXth Century. In fact, with this research it is possible to establish that some merchants bankers have contributed desively with capital to some of the first industrial initiatives in this province. This contribution werw not only a way to diversify the risk, but also a decided bet to create a secodary sector until them very little developed in Spain during the XIXth Century. Such sector was specially attractive, from a financial point of view, as it was later shown.
