Abstract

Our main goal is to bring the reader a general view of the tourism policies undertaken by the Spanish governments during the XX century. The paper is divided in three blocks: First, we analyse the period 1900-1936, a period which contemplated the emergence of Spain as a tourism place. The second period, spanning over Franco's Dictatorship (1936-1975), was characterised by the consolidation of Spain as a mass tourism place. And last but not least, the modern times (1975-2000), whose main features are the decentralisation of tourism policies due to the increasing role played by the regional governments, and the leading position of Spain as a tourist country world-wide.
