Abstract

This text offers a brief outline of the history of neo-Greek theatre, both as a literary genre and as performance, from its beginnings during the 16th century, right up to the post-war years. Mention is made of key plays and figures who contributed to the development of theatre both in Greece itself and in those regions in which the Greek communities of the diaspora flourished before the revolution of 1821 and the beginning of the Greek War of Independence. After the creation of the modern Greek state, the text charts the efforts of the first professional actors and the attempts made to set up theatre associations. Finally, the text turns its attention to children's theatre, not only in schools but also in professional performances and theatre workshops for children.
