Abstract

John Bauer is one of the best known Swedish illustrators of the 20th century. Famous for his pictures of the deep forests and mythical creatures of the North, Bauer worked in close collaboration with the editors of an annual of fairy tales. Together with the texts, his artwork set the standard for what many Swedes still consider to be the authentic spirit of the country's densely wooded and largely unspoilt landscape.
