Abstract

"Buying mittens", Tebukuro o kaini in the original Japanese, is a Japanese children's book written by Nankichi Niimi. As I mentioned in the first edition of "Un mundo muchas miradas", the author is the same one who wrote "Gon, the Little Fox". Translated versions of "Buying mittens" have been published in France, Korea and the United States and the book is one of Nankichi's best known works, famous all over the world.

The main characters in the story are all, as in "Gon, the Little Fox", foxes. It is a story about a mother fox and her son. The scene which develops around the pure, innocent foxes serves to highlight the pure, simple love which exists between the mother and her son. As a counterpoint, Nankichi turns our attention to the human race. What are human mothers and sons like? Are humans to be trusted? The answer lies with each individual reader. This universal question, posed once again by this story, is one of the most compelling questions of our time.
