Abstract

New clues are provided for the study of the altarpiece of the Holy Name of Jesus, located in the Saint Mary's cathedral in Vitoria, which was promoted by the ambassador of Charles V, Juan Alonso de Gámiz, for his chapel in the mentioned temple. Particularly, analyse his paintings, reliefs and decorative device in relation to similar examples and sources of Flemish inspiration. As will be dem- onstrated, this is the only example of Flemish Man- nierist altarpiece of its kind that is currently kept in the Basque Country and the Iberian Peninsula, as well as an early evidence of international Mannierism spread out from Antwerp in the mid-sixteenth century.
