Abstract

This essay analyzes the tendency towards insolvency of cooperatives in Spain, Basque Region and Navarre for 2005-2013, confronting the following data: the evolution of the number of cooperatives and its relative weight in relation to the rest of enterprises, and the number of declarations of insolvency of cooperatives. The results of these comparisons, even if they should be analyzed together with other elements, certify that cooperatives show a greater resistance to face financial and economical crises, as their tendency towards insolvency-declaration is lower than for other kind of enterprises. The features and decisions of cooperatives explain this strength: the involvement of partners, the mechanisms of cooperation among cooperatives, or the profit-capitalization policy, in addition to the different measures in the Law. However, in order to face the weaknesses that cooperatives still suffer, it is necessary to go more deeply into the knowledge on cooperatives and their visibility.
