Abstract

This article shares the results of a research work whose general objective was to identify the forms of voluntary community work that are practiced in the Nahua communities of Santa María Tecuanulco, Santa Catarina del Monte and San Pablo Ixayoc, belonging to the municipality of Texcoco, State of Mexico and establish its degree of approximation with the anti-systemic and countercultural practices of the solidarity economy. The research assumed a sociological and legal approach and included an exhaustive review of the legislation that regulates these forms of work, both at the national and state levels. Additionally, semi-structured interviews with key informants and participant observation were conducted. The results obtained show that despite the various exogenous factors that intervene in the disintegration of their indigenous and peasant worldview, a wide variety of forms of voluntary community work subsist in the studied communities, which exhibit great vitality and assume a clearly self-managed and supportive. These practices can be grouped into four subtypes, namely: those related to social aspects or needs, those associated with religious rites and festivals, those of a hybrid nature that combine elements of social and religious order, and emerging forms.
