Abstract

The capacity of cooperatives to create and maintain stable and quality employment and their potential for economic resilience, among other things, has been already analysed in the literature. But gender issues have not traditionally had a strong presence in the academic and institutional sphere of the social economy. Studies and initiatives of various kinds are needed to fill this gap, and this article aims to take a step, albeit partial, in that direction.

The aim of this article is to present a first attempt to link cooperatives with economic resilience and women's employment in the ACBC. The main objective of this article is to identify and measure how a greater development of cooperatives in certain regions favours the resilience of female employment, thus identifying positive social impacts. Specifically, using aggregate data for Spain as a whole, we want to focus on the information available for the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (hereafter ACBC) and define the aspects that determine this impact.

The results confirm an idea that is taken for granted in the academic literature: the employment generated by cooperatives shows greater stability and responsiveness in times of uncertainty. On the other hand, although the scarcity of gender-related data is evident, the evolution of female cooperative employment and cooperative density is also favourable.
