Abstract
The Royal Decree of 1838 required that lawyers̓ associations be created in major cities that did not have one. That led to the creation of these institutions in Bilbao, San Sebastian, and Vitoria (the origin of today's Associations in Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Álava). This article studies their evolution through the 19th century, paying particular attention to their relationship with the Justice administration,
policy, and institutional configuration in the Basque Provinces.
