Abstract

One of the most interesting aspects of notaries public in the Basque Country is their evolution over the centuries from provincial council scribes to notaries public. Notary public training, as legal experts since the 19th century, and the introduction of the Spanish Notary Public Law of 1862 in Álava/Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Navarre had particular impact on this field. The analysis carried
out includes the incorporation of two traits specific to the provincial territories in this notary public training process, being the Basque language and the unique Civil Law of each territory.
