Abstract
This article is based on a lecture that offered a simplified explanation of certain aspects of the «Roman family». I therefore concentrate exclusively on Roman Law during the first three centuries of the Empire, ignoring that of other periods, and try to summarise the salient aspects of the agnatic family, cognatic family, patria potestas, manus and marriage. I also refer to other family models adopted in the Roman world, specifically the marriage of Jews and Christians and marriage in Roman Egypt.
