Abstract

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the legal, economic, and social profile of Bizkaia women presented characteristics that distinguished them from others of the Spanish Empire. They could lead estates. This earned them some abilities and obligations in managing their domestic economy that were similar, and not subordinate, to those of men. These qualities had a great impact on the evolution of a sector of the numerous elite of commercial houses that became rich overseas.
