Abstract

This article traces the evolution of medieval diplomacy in Navarre through the analysis of the international treaties established by the monarchs of Navarre with other sovereigns in the Late Middle Ages, from Joan II and Philip I of Evreux to John of Albret and Catherine of Foix. It traces the evolution of diplomatic relations, conflict management, peace negotiations, marriages between dynasties and other forms of political exchange between powers. Agreements included truces, armistices, alliances, peace treaties and arbitration, mechanisms that generally proved fragile. Particular attention is paid to the arbitrations established to resolve disputes, with key actors such as the Church or various kings as the only mediators endowed with auctoritas
